Silhillians Sirens v Banbury Belles

A new chapter was written in the history books at Silhillians Rugby Club on Sunday afternoon as the newly formed Sils Sirens Womens team took to the field for their very first match v Banbury Belles, cheered on by a crowd of 100+ expectant supporters.

The Sirens, lead by captain Emma Smith, put in a sterling performance. The scrums and lineouts were excellent and the tackling and passing improved as the game went on. Banbury ran out clear winners running in some excellent tries. Both teams enjoyed some traditional post match hospitality and are looking forward to a return fixture on 13th March.

The team are coached by Jonathan Trace, former Chairman of the successful Silhillians Mini & Junior section. Building on the success of the 2015 Rugby World Cup Jonathan floated the idea of a women’s team. Following initial interest of 4 or 5 the squad now stands at 15 players, the majority of whom have no rugby experience.

RFU Community coach Ant Collins, who was among the spectators at the game, is running a Ladies and 16+ Pitch Up & Play Event at Silhilians RFC on Sunday 31st January 1.00-3.00. This will be mostly aimed at introduction into contact and is for all levels of experience.
