Sutton Coldfield were the visitors this weekend after a little delay waiting for Sils to enter the field, Sils kicked off. The game started competitively with both sides being equal to what each had to offer. The first Sils scrum was won convincingly and from this Jacob was fed the ball who with the help of Jamie’s well worked dummy found a gap and ran convincingly to score the 1st try of the match, unfortunately his conversion effort came back off the post. The next period had both sides conceding possession, penalties, knock on’s and turnover ball from both sides. This being said the work rate from both sides could not be faulted both sets of forwards were competing well at every breakdown. A Sutton scrum was won and in almost similar style to Sils they fed along the line to break clear and score in the corner. The scores remained equal due to the conversion being unsuccessful. Sutton were now getting a little bit more of the play and needed some excellent covering work from Mark after a kick over the top from Sutton saw him drop on the ball enabling the forwards to recover and protect the back line with some excellent rucking. Sils were now keeping the ball in the Sutton half of the pitch and a line out close to the Sutton line to Sils had Joe A coming of the front of the line to break clear but being held back by the Sutton defence, Sils still had possession and were rucking well inching closer to the line but just couldn’t break the Sutton defence down until a Sils scrum was won well and fed out along the line to Nathan on the wing to score in the corner. Jacobs conversion from a long way out fell just short again, good effort.
Half Time 10 - 5
Sutton started the 2nd half well turning over Sils in the ruck, from a Sils penalty and earning a penalty of their own, which they took quick breaking well and forcing another penalty that looked like they would score from but Sils did well to hold the ball up and from the resulting scrum that they won, ended up with 2 consecutive penalties of their own, a great response to Sutton’s pressure early on. A lineout to Sils won well and fed out to Elliot who with a lovely twisting run broke free to score, well converted by Jacob. The game went back and forth again with both sides giving away penalties and conceding possession, once again turnovers were the norm. Eventually a Sutton penalty had Sils turning over again and Elliot finding himself with space in the corner to score his 2nd try of the match. Another good attempt from Jacob falling just short for the conversion. Sutton continued to play some good competitive rugby which led to their No 8 breaking clear to score in the corner, No conversion. This gave Sutton encouragement and they seemed to find an extra level battling hard winning a couple of penalties late on leading to a line out which they won deep inside the Sils 22, to which they didn’t waste to score in the corner ,unconverted. A nervous few minutes for Sils to hold out which they managed to do.
A great competitive game from both sides played in the true spirit of the game. Well done all involved.
Final Score 22 - 15
