U15 Warwickshire RFU Cup Round 1
Silhillians v Sutton Coldfield
After the disappointment of not being able to enter a cup competition last season, Sils first game of the season had them hosting Sutton Coldfield in their first Pool 1 match of the Warwickshire RFU Cup.
The first five minutes was an even affair with both teams battling for possession. A penalty to Sils kicked to touch for the first lineout of the game and a test to, see if the lifting at the lineout practice had worked. Collecting the ball at the line and good hands across the backs had Hanni breaking with strength and speed being stopped short of the line, some excellent support work from Ben S gave Hanni an option feeding him to go over for Sils first try in the corner. No Conversion. A long period of intense rugby with both sides conceding possession. Sutton took a quick penalty breaking fast until a great Ben S tackle sent the Sutton Wing into touch and stopping a certain Sutton Try. From the resulting lineout Sils cleared up field forcing a penalty to only lose possession from the lineout, but a combination of great tackling from Woody followed by some sharp clearing up from Ben Garside, got the ball back in Sils hands and out to Hanni who evaded all tackles from inside Sils half to score under the posts, which Elliot converted. From the restart solid forward rucking gave no chance to Sutton and almost in the same way as the previous try, Ben S ran from inside the Sils half to score Sils 3rd try. Converted by Elliot. A quickly taken Sutton penalty got them advancing 10 yds due to Sils not retreating quick enough. Sils were again penalised for being offside and again Sutton took the Penalty quick catching Sils sleeping to score their first try in the corner. No conversion. Jamie having come on for the injured Hanni got straight into the action with some excellent rucking, which eventually ended with the ball in his hands on the wing to score in the corner. No Conversion. Enter the Drone. A knock on from Sils and a good Sils scrum came to no avail as Sutton came away with the ball, which they kicked up field only for it to fall into the hands of Jamie feeding Jacob inside Sills half whose strong run Led to him scoring the final try of the half Converted by Elliot.
Half Time 31 – 5
The restart kick from Sils didn’t go 10 so Sutton elected for a scrum, which they won but Ben Garside was at it again with an excellent tackle and drive winning a deserved Penalty. An eventual lineout to Sils was fed out to Jacob whose dummy pass with Ethan, opened up a gap which he accepted to break through for his 2nd try under the posts, but failed to convert with a rushed drop kick. Sutton continued to battle and another break was halted by a strong defence with a solid tackle from Adam under pressure followed by excellent rucking from the forwards with Kyle feeding Ethan who broke free to score under the posts and then followed up with the conversion. Even though the game was getting further out of Suttons reach they did not stop battling, a succession of knock-on’s, scrums and lineouts ended when Jacob charged down an attempted Sutton Clearance to score under the posts. Converted by Ethan. A penalty to Sutton came to nothing as the forwards still continued to work hard forcing possession back into Sils hands For Ben S to score his hat trick, no conversion. The final five minutes of the game continued as the previous 55 had with neither side slowing down and Sutton were not going to just leave with only a single try, a battling end from Sutton gave them a deserved try in the corner and an even better conversion from a long way out.
A great start for Sils to take all 4 points and a bonus point that may be crucial come the final standings. Well done Sutton who’s battling performance should be praised and at times played some good rugby to be proud of.
