Sils Saxons vs Camp Hill RUFC
Maria Carey may have sung all I want for Christmas is “you”, but for the Sils “you”has always meant front row. This week Christmas had come early at Copt Heath, as Saxons turned up to play against Camp Hill with no less than 4 props thanks to Old Salts loaning two of them.
Sils started the match brightly catching the kick off and working through some phases to make their way out of their own half and up to Camp Hill’s 22. Sils were unlucky not to go over early on, being denied by a forward pass from Andy Cunnington aka ‘Von’ to Andy Richmond. After a tight first ten minutes some good hands from Richmond, and Ben Lowe combined to put Olly Powel through down the wing for the opening score. Camp Hill came back quickly with some work through their forwards to level the scores at 5-5after 15 minutes.
A good driving Maul from a straight line out (?) combined with some powerful carries from Ed Tickle and John Brownie ‘Brownie’ put Sils back on the 5m line. A tap and go penalty taken by Nick (Salts) allowed the big man to crash over from short range. Richmond added the extras, to bring the score to 12-5. Around the 20 minute mark, Von managed to bring a box onto the field, climb on top of it and execute a text book high tackle. The resulting penalty was drilled into the corner and after some pressure Camp’s managed to dink a filthy kick over the Sils defence, to bring the score to a close 12-10. Saxon’s Olly P then returned the favour to Ben L and put him through to score, increasing the Saxons lead to 17- 10. This brought up the half time oranges with Sils Just in front.
Sils came back out after half time with a fresh set of Props, and this told almost immediately with Mitch finding his way down the left wing, to set up a quick pop for Henry Morris to poach another try. Saxons then had their best period of the match with Paul Hollier ‘Pabs’ taking a great kick return in own half, breaking the line and making it to the Camp Hill 5 m line before off-loading to Richmond to score and convert. There followed a brief moment of concern as it was initially suspected that Josh Mallett had his leg broken by an ankle tap. Once the screaming stopped however, it was discovered he had simply kicked his own leg on the way to the floor.
After a couple of dominant scrums, Martin (Salts) was up and running at the Camp Hill 22, he was eventually hauled down but not before getting the ball out wide to Ben L, who manged to find Mallett. Mallett sensed his opportunity to put his earlier injury scare behind him, by charging down the wing, throwing multiple dummies, and scoring in the corner to bring the score to 34-10.
The final 15 minutes of the match were characterised by strong Camp Hill attack and an even stronger Saxon’s defence. The best example of this was ‘Pabs’ embracing his inner “Leaguie” to put in a magnificent no arms shoulder charge on his own 5m line, to cut the Camp Hill attack dead. Sils were then penalised and had to deal with a series of tap and go penalties on their own line. The referee balanced his earlier leniency with ‘Pabs’ with a trumped up yellow card, and Sils would finish the match with 14. Camp Hill came again, but were turned over by a good counter ruck, which would close out the match, and another good win for the Saxons. FT Saxons 34-10 Camp Hill 3's
