Ooh that pitch is big!!

Silhillians 38 Barkers Butts 29

A glorious September morning saw our first game of the season against Barkers. There was a fantastic turn out showing the enthusiasm the boys have to play as part of this squad. The game started well with both sides playing some good Rugby from the off. Sils however appeared to be forgetting that we have the whole pitch to play on, leaving Barkers centres and winger relatively unmarked during phases of open play. Lesson- Barkers score first. The kick however was unsuccessful.
Sils quickly learned from their mistake, strengthening both defence and attack using the park from touchline to touchline. Sils first try came from a nice little pick and go from Scott, conversion followed from Elliott. The game then began to swing both ways with some great Rugby being played by both sides, Sills working hard at the breakdown and at scrum time turning Barkers over on a number of occasions.
Barkers then scored twice back to back, this seemed to push our boys up a gear. George scored next after some good running and positioning to receive the ball out wide. Barkers responded and again went over for 5 more points. More nail biting moments for the parents. Sils then found their form, great work by the forwards at the breakdown led to gaps opening up. Kyle then spotted a channel, backed himself resulting in him going over for a great try. Ethan Walton then quickly capitalised on Barkers players with their backs turned to score his first which was closely followed by a charging run for his second of the game. Try of the day came from Charlie who had worked hard all game. He picked up with clearly only one thing on his mind- 5 more points. The clock was ticking down and Sils were sitting on a comfortable lead but Barkers were not finished and once again found the try line. The whistle blew and the boys had earned the themselves a well-deserved and hard fought win against very strong opposition in what was in many ways " a good old fashioned game of Rugby"

Well done boys, a great start to the new season !!
