Kidderminster 21-25 Silhillians

Silhillians came away from Kidderminster with 2 valuable league points after a hard fought battle in which the lead changed hands no less that four times.

On a clear and breezy afternoon, watched by a healthy size crowd Kidderminster set down their mark early on with a number of fast, aggressive rucks which had Sils on the back foot. First blood went to Kidderminster. A blind side move from a 10m scrum saw the left wing squeeze over in the corner. 5-0.

Sils remained under the cosh but their resolute defence held firm. Following a rare sortie into the Kidderminster half Sils were rewarded with a penalty after 25 mins which was duly despatched by Sils fly-half Harry Law. 5-3.

7 mins later and against the run of play Sils took the lead courtesy of a second Harry Law penalty. 5-6.

Despite not being able to unleash their pacey three quarter line Sils were heading for the break with a narrow lead. The last move of the half saw Kidderminster launch one final attack into the Sils 22. A silly penalty gave Kidderminster a welcome 3 points and at half time Sils trailed 8-6.

8 mins into the second period Sils fell further behind to another needless penalty. 11-6.

Cheered on by a vociferous away support Sils refused to lie down. With their three quarters starting to get the ball in hand Sils started to stretch the Kidderminster defence. Fly half Harry Law pounced on a loose ball and scored the first try of the afternoon for Sils. 11-11.

With half an hour to go and all to play for both sides began to move the ball wide in search of the next score. With both sides in the bottom 3 of the league 2 points were vital.

In a 10 minute period mid way through the second half Kidderminster stretched their lead to 10 points thanks to an unconverted interception try and a penalty. 21-11.

Kidderminster now believed that the game was theirs for the taking and continued to push hard. Excellent Sils defence, particularly from wingers Nic Powell and Chris Cove prevented certain tries.

Sils still believed that they had more to offer if they could get good ball to their key runners.

On 66 mins centre Si Doherty made a sublime break and ghosted in to score. Law added the extra 2 points and with 10 mins to play Sils trained 21-18.

Moving into the final minute and still trailing by 3 points Sils mounted one final attack. Prop Lawrence White with ball under arm went on a bullocking charge and the heart of the Kidderminster defence. Quick ruck ball and swift hands saw the ball arrive on the left wing in the hands of 18 year old debutant Nic Powell. With no room to manoeuvre and with the home defence drifting across the pitch towards him it looked like a lost cause. Powell, with ability and confidence beyond his years pinned his ears back and went for it. With inches to spare he beat his first man on the outside, then a step inside wrong footed the second and a final side step saw off the third defender and Powell cruised in under the posts to give Sils the lead again. Man of the Match Harry Law took his personal tally for the afternoon to 15 points with the conversion to seal a famous win. 21-25.
