Sils produced one of their best performances in recent years as they entertained unbeaten league leaders Newbold On Avon at Copt Heath.
The home side were pinned back for much of the first half but outstanding defense and smart decision making ensured that the visitors only had 3 points to show for their pressure at half time. Coach Ed Orgee instilled some additional belief into the side during the break and 2 minutes into the second half John Robinson took an excellent interception to race away under the posts for the first try of the game. Steve Hawkins made sure of the extra 2-points and with their tales up Sils started to impose their authority on the game. The forwards showed their steel in the scrum and the constant accuracy in the lineout provided a perfect platform for the backs to seize control of field position.
With Dave Edwards making a nuisance of himself from scrum half, Newbold were forced into mistakes and Sils pressure was rewarded with a really well worked team try finished by Lee Jones, returning to the side after a dislocated shoulder less than a month ago. The league leaders upped their game and started to ask more and more questions of the Sils defense and were awarded a try which got them right back in the game with 20 minutes to go. Newbold kept coming but Sils strong defense earnt them a penalty which Steve Hawkins slotted from distance to make the score 15-8.
Sils second half dominance was soon rewarded. An inside ball from Robinson gave Cameron Law a gap which he exploited excellently – taking on the defense and powering over the line for his third try in two games. Hawkins added the extras and another impressive penalty kick in the dying minutes to give the Sils an impressive 25-8 victory.
Sils have a rest from the league this week and head over to Old Laurentians on 12th November to build on this performance.
