The game got off to a frantic start with Sils trying to force the play and making a number of errors. After some early pressure Sils took the lead through the reliable boot of Steve Hawkins. Sils began to apply more and more pressure on the home side and extended their lead through a quick tap penalty by Cameron Law who dotted down for the try, successfully converted by Steve Hawkins. This seemed to spark the home side into life who began to work their way back into the game. They kicked well against the wind and their chase was good. The home side were soon on the score sheet themselves with a good counter attacking move resulting in an unconverted try. After a stop start first 30 mins the game settled down and Sils began to play the rugby we have come to expect, some strong forward running and quick clean rucking, the only thing letting the visitors down was the final pass. Sils did however manage another penalty through Steve Hawkins before half time to take a narrow lead into the break, 8-10.
With a slender lead and the possibility of 2nd place up for grabs Sils needed a big second half playing against a strong breeze. However it was the home side that scored first after kicking a penalty. Sils ill-discipline was starting to hurt them as they couldn’t put phases together and the home side used the conditions to pin Sils in their own half. After regrouping Sils managed to score 6 unanswered points through the boot of Steve Hawkins and had a try disallowed to win a vital game that ensured Banbury did complete a double of Silhillians and more importantly means the chance of second in the league and a promotion play-off spot is firmly in their own hands.
Sils entertain 3rd placed local rivals Berkswell & Balsall at Copt Heath on Saturday 21st April, all support would be gratefully received.
