Silhillian’s hosted Nuneaton Old Edwardian’s in the first edition of the battle of the bog seat. A competition that has run for years following the theft of a bog seat from the Nuneaton Old Ed’s toilet.

Sil’s looking for their own royal engagement on a slightly less glamorous thrown, started the stronger side putting their patterns in place to earn them some early go forward. The Sils pack piled on the pressure and Matt Lee made sure he capitalised on this, improving his try scoring form to cross the whitewash. More pressure was followed up with penalty shot converted by Tom Lee.
Continuing on the front foot, the Sils had another try scoring opportunity through a James Arney break through to put Harry Pick in the clear for a simple 20m sprint to the line only to get caught 5m’s short. The ball was recycled for Chidi Nzekwe to knock on in the resulting ruck. Seemingly this meant a change in momentum and the rest of the half belonged to Old Ed’s.
Sil’s penalty count increased which led to several driving maul lineouts and an eventual Old Ed’s try. Sil’s penalty diarrhoea continued for Old Ed’s to again kick to the corner for a driving maul… with Ed’s frustration mounting after multiple phases of play, it was time for another Sils player together his head knocked in, two weeks on the trot! This week’s victim being Joe Bullock. The youngster took it well, resulting in a very questionable yellow card for Nun’s number 8. The pressure being relieved for Sils to clear their lines and get to half time 10-5 up.
For the second half, Sils reset and got back to their game. Line out pressure and scrummaging set piece for Sils was excellent all day, Ronan Jones making steals on Old Ed’s ball and Tim Trace managing the troops and co-ordinating Sils lineout ball magnificently to keep a 100% set piece record.
Sils knew the next score was crucial and capitalised after some slick hands from family duo James Arney and Tom Manise to set Dom Marks free down the left touchline to clearly stay in touch and roll over the line. Keeping play simple, Sil’s captain Tom Lee cleared the lines from the resultant restart, for an Old Ed’s winger to clumsily knock the ball backwards into touch. The on rushing Sils kick chase were the first to react with James Arney hurling the ball to Harry Pick for a quick line out throw for the fly half for a simple saunter under the posts.
Sils progress was slightly thwarted with a Matt Lee yellow card for what looked like rare involvement in a ruck however, Sils got back on track by forward power play with Nick Elliott’s carrying Billy Vunipola like giving the back line a solid platform to attack. A neat chip, chase and gather into the Old Ed’s 22 was finished off by Harry Pick to award Sils with their first bonus point win of the year.
A late solo consolation try from Old Ed’s did not dampen Sils spirits as a pub golf visit to Moseley finished off a very good day at the office for the squad. Sils season is definitely back on track and a mid-table position by Christmas is now becoming a very realistic target. Next week’s fixture see Sils travel away to Old Yardlian’s.
