A sloppy start from the Sils where persistent penalties were given away, comprised with poor ball retention allowed Leamington to take the upper hand in the early exchanges. Fighting against the hill and the wind it looked like it was going to be a long afternoon in the sticky Warwickshire clay.
Luckily Sils managed to defend hard and keep score line clean before starting to build momentum. Consistent phase play from some aggressive forward carrying meant Sils played in the right areas for long stints. Sils lost their captain Tom Lee with a knee injury midway through the half however it didn’t affect their go forward as Phil Martin entered the fray to keep the pack moving forward. Eventually pressure told with Matt Lee crossing the whitewash on the half hour mark. Sils gained a penalty in front of the sticks on the stroke of half time, Ben Crowe knocked the ball over and the Sils were 10-0 at half time.
Sils continued the second half in the same manner. With lineout and scrum functioning well, Lewis ‘The Wab’ White led the carries upfront to keep Sils on the front foot. The forwards momentum was rewarded when Stephen Hall boshed his way across the line to get Sils into a commanding position at 15-0. Ed Atkins was replaced for the fresh legs of new dad, Gaz Rock, on the blindside flank to add more firepower to the Sils pack.
More pressure led to another penalty for Crowe to put Sils well and truly in command. Harry Law got a second appearance in two weeks, coming on for Ross James. The fresh legs kept Sils on the front foot. Lineout and driving mauls being the go to call, Ronan Jones broke off the back of a maul to bosh his way over for the third try. With two minutes to go, Crowe drop goaled the conversion to get speed up the restart and attempt to get the 4th and more importantly bonus point try. A strong counterattack from the restart could not be converted though and the game finished 25-0.
Sils have a well earnt rest week before hosting second in the league Malvern at Copt Heath in two week’s time.
