Silhillians 1st XV travelled to Old Laurentians in Rugby for a league fixture in M2 West South league

The game started brightly for the Copt Heath crew when from the opening kick off the referee blew (a familiar sound of the game) in favour of Sils. Skipper Tom Lee took the opportunity to convert into 3 points and the Sils took the lead in the opening minute.
The then opening exchanges comprised of solid Sils defence who were rewarded when Matt Lee plucked an interception on his own 22 to race away only to get caught just short of the opposition line. Amongst the ever approaching Laurent’s defence chase was winger Dan Walker who went over under the posts following Matts laboured off load, 8-0 to Sils.
Laurent’s quickly hit back with a penalty of their own. From the resulting kick off, Toby Wassell stretched too far and felt a pulled hamstring. Toby off, Steve Hall on and time for a re-shuffle in the back line with Conor Grogan once again moving to centre and Matt Lee shifting to the wing. Amongst the Sils dismay Laurent’s scored their opening try to make it 10-8 to the home side.
Following Matt’s previous sudden emptying of pace it was time for the wing to turn on the class. Firstly a fortunate bounce from Tom Lee box kick saw him gather and dot down under the post. 15-10 back in Sils favour. Minutes later following a solid scrum platform, set by props Loz White and Mark Parry, and then a perfectly weighted kick from the newly crowned king of grubbering, Harry Pick, Matt latched onto the ball to dot down once more. The Matt Lee show had its interval at half time with the score at 25-10 but this star was definitely now born and the show must go on with more 'try time' after the break. Again from the solid scrum set piece, Matt and Harry combining once more for a simple switch move to open up the defence for him to take centre stage again to complete his hatrick. At 32-10, a win looked certain for the away side.
This dramatic episode was set to take a dark turn for Sils. Conceding a try, a yellow card for hooker Fred Howard from the resultant kick off and some inconsistent and incorrect referring at the breakdown swung the game in Laurent’s favour. The floodgates opened and two tries were conceded within 4 minutes, a Tom Lee yellow card for a supposed high tackle quickly followed this. The game about to deteriorate further. The curtain fell on the star man’s day as Matt Lee limped off injured with a hamstring injury following a heroic try saving tackle on his opposite wing. Score slashed to 32-29, 13 men on the pitch, talisman winger off- disaster.
How could this get any more bizarre? Well a double yellow for the home side after a fracas involving now make shift wing Tim Trace. Game well and truly turned on its head. An old Laurent’s penalty levelled at 32 all. Tom and Fred both returned to the fray but against the odds a breakaway let the home side take the lead, 37-32! The Sils pushed and finally managed to heave into the opposition 22 but with time running out and score board against them the copt heath crusade could not keep their composure and get the final decisive score.
