Old Coventrians 24-8 Silhillians

A disappointing show from the Sils let a fired-up Old Coventrians take the spoils on Saturday afternoon and with them two league points.
The visitors got off to the worst possible start as some soft tackling and strong running by the Old Covs’ winger combined to leave the home side 5-0 up within the first five minutes. This was doubled soon after as an Old Covs’ blind side move allowed the same winger to power over for Covs’ second score of the day.
A further penalty, resulting in a yellow card for scrum-half Harry Law was countered by a Dave Grey effort to leave the score at 15-3 at half-time, with Old Covs’ also down to thirteen men at one stage. The Sils had also lost lock Mike Gowen to a freak concussion as he attempted to secure his own kick-through.
The second half saw no real discernible improvement, with the Sils essentially failing to turn up for this game. With passes going awry and attacking positions squandered, basic errors prevented any chance of building a solid platform from which to take the game to the home side. What bright patches there were also proved to be short-lived, as indiscipline allowed Old Covs to keep the scoreboard ticking over with a succession of penalty attempts.
A late consolation score by Peter ‘Shelf’ Nicholls (photo) was scant consolation for the supporters, but enough to show that this could have been a much better day at the office for the Sils.
