Seven tries, a bonus point win, nil against and free running props!

Sils welcomed Market Bosworth RUFC to Copt Heath last Saturday. This was the first senior meeting between the two clubs although the respective Mini & Junior sections have enjoyed regular fixtures for many years.
The visitors were still looking for their first win of the season whilst Sils were coming into the game on the back of an impressive win at Malvern the week before.

Sils began the brightest and were ahead inside 4mins. From a lineout inside the Market Bosworth 22 a series of close pick and drives enabled captain Peter Nicholls to touch down. The dependable boot of Steve Hawkins added the extra two points.

4 mins - Sils 7-0 Market Bosworth

With Market Bosworth still not out of the starting blocks Sils extended their lead. The Market Bosworth fullback threw an optimistic long pass on his home 22 straight into the arms of Sils prop Mark O’ Leary who showed an exceptional turn of pace to out run the covering scrum half and cross for Sils’ second try. Hawkins added the conversion.

13 min – Sils 14-0 Market Bosworth

15 mins – Sils 17-0 Hawkins penalty

With Market Bosworth still struggling to get any decent possession Sils began to stretch their defence. Wing Dan Super gathered a long Harry Law pass wide on the right on his own 10m line. On halfway he fed the ball hungry O’ Leary who yet again showed a great turn of pace taking the ball to the Market Bosworth 22m before off loading the deftest of passes to hooker Lee Jones who in turn offloaded to a grateful Ollie Beech allowing the Sils center to run in unopposed for his fourth try of the season. Hawkins conversion.

26 mins – Sils 24-0 Market Bosworth

Sils earned their try bonus point on the stroke of half time. An impressive driving maul by the Sils forwards allowed scrum half Tom Lee to twist and turn his way over for a score. Hawkins conversion.

Half time – Sils 31-0 Market Bosworth

With the game effectively won and with the bonus point secured Sils eased off the gas when they should have pressed home their dominance. Some spirited play from Market Bosworth saw them with get more possession in the opening 15 minutes of the second period that they had had all game. However the resolute home defence ensured that Market Bosworth never advanced to a scoring position.

Sils looked to have scored their fifth try of the afternoon when an electric turn of pace by prop forward Mark Parry put No.8 Tama Hill in only for the referee to call play back. This was to be Parry’s last involvement as he was assisted to the touch line with a hamstring injury.

Within 5 mins of Parry leaving the field Sils did get their fifth try and it was Parry’s replacement Laurence White who claimed it powering over from 5m out with two defenders on his back. Hawkins conversion.

55 mins – Sils 38-0 Market Bosworth

Fly half Steve Hawkins took his personal tally for the afternoon to 18 points when he added Sils sixth try. A line break on halfway by No.8 Tama Hill put the Market Bosworth defence on the back foot. Quick ball fed Hawkins just inside the Market Bosworth 10m line. With plenty still to do Hawkins pinned his ears back and beat the covering fullback on the outside before finishing in style in the corner. Unfortunately he was unable to improve his own score.

62 mins – Sils 43-0 Market Bosworth

Quite fittingly Sils rounded off their scoring as they had begun. A scrum on the Market Bosworth 22m saw Sils inspirational captain Peter Nicholls pick up and race down the 5m channel to score his second try of the game in the corner. Again Hawkins was unable to improve the score.

68 mins – Sils 48-0 Market Bosworth

Try as they might Sils pushed to pass the 50-point barrier but alas it was not to be.
An impressive all-round performance, which many thought, should have seen at least three more tries. That said to hold a team to nil in this league is no mean feat. This win elevates Sils to 6th place in Midlands 1 (West)

This Saturday Sils travel to 9th placed Old Laurentian who have a similar win/loss ratio to Sils but who are yet to secure any bonus points.
