On a clear but very windy afternoon it was the visitors who adapted to the conditions the best. Early pressure by the Sils pack went unrewarded and it was the visitors who stretched out a 0-9 lead thanks to 3 well struck penalties. Things got worse for the hosts when influential hooker Lee Jones left the field with a broken arm after 30 mins.
Walsall dictated the pattern of the game with some good ball retention skills. Sils then began to make effective use of the conditions and put Walsall under a great deal of pressure. But, once again, Walsall defended really well and Sils were restricted to a solitary Steve Hawkins penalty. From the re-start Walsall increased their lead immediately. The kick off was claimed by the Walsall openside flanker who was allowed to run in under the post unopposed. As the first half came to a close Walsall were penalised for illegally gaining possession at the tackle area and Steve Hawkins added another kick to make it 6 – 16 at the interval.
It was a similar story at the start of the second half. Walsall were again penalized at the breakdown, and Hawkins closed the gap to seven points. With Walsall struggling to avoid giving penalties away at the breakdown Sils took advantage and put their opponents under immense pressure. Following a patient series of pick and drives by the Sils pack the ball was moved swiftly to the right wing where Nic Powell touched down. At 14-16 Sils were in with chance. Walsall, to their credit, came back strongly and gained a good attacking position close to the Sils tryline. A well-executed switch pass sent the Walsall 12 in unopposed to score under the posts. He then added the easy conversion. As the game reached the final ten minutes, the Sils narrowed the gap yet again. From a quick penalty captain Pete Nicholls powered over for an unconverted try. Walsall were to have the last say when a well struck drop goal gave them a 19-26 win.
