Two tries from Nic Powell & one each from the ever improving Matt Bacon and Steve Hall secured a hard fought bonus point win at Market Bosworth.

by Sam Bradley;

SILHILIANS moved to fifth in the table after winning their second away game of the year at Market Bosworth despite the home side opening the scoring early on with a penalty after two minutes.

But this was followed by a brilliant try by Steve Hall as he peeled away to the side from a driving maul and Sils and the kick was successfully converted by Steve Hawkins to put them up 7-3.

Market Bosworth endeavoured to keep Sils at bay but were unsuccessful as Hooker Matt Bacon powered to the line with Sils second try three minutes later and another confident kick from Steve Hawkins gave Sils an 11 point advantage.

But a determined Bosworth team didn’t give Sils a second to re-group and came right back with a superb try in the ninth minute to give Sils something to think about.

And thankfully it was their hunger to win that came to the fore after a great 36-15 win over Malvern last week and Nic Powell stepped up to the plate scoring a great try with a hat-trick of conversions by Hawkins making it 21-10 after 12 pulsating minutes.

The remaining 28 minutes of the first half saw both teams' backs defend well and Bosworth denied Sils from scoring again and managing to score a try and a penalty kick themselves for an exciting second half.

The second half got underway brilliantly as Hawkins kicked another penalty to put Sils back in the lead 24-23 up.

Bosworth then came back with a try but no conversion eighteen minutes in and with the score now 28-24 Sils needed to push hard and get a win.

And they did forcing two consecutive penalties which allowed Harry Law to add 6 points to the afternoon’s reckoning making it 30-28 with 19 minutes to play.

For the next quarter of an hour both teams managed to cancel eachother out but as the game entered the last minute Nic Powell sees a gap and strides through to secure that bonus point and the overall victory with a 37-28 win after Hawkins conversion signals the final whistle.

Sils play at home at Copt Heath on Saturday, January 18 against Old Laurentians, kick off 2.15pm.
