SILS welcomed Barker Butts to Copt Heath last Saturday who had sweet revenge for last November’s defeat by beating their hosts 21-30 writes Sam Bradley.
Only four minutes in and a kick by Steve Hawkins put Sils into a scrum on the centre line, but they lost the ball and Barker Butts collected and ran in for a try.
From the restart Sils were not putting enough pressure on Barker Butts and were late on some line outs, but as they continued to defend the onslaught from Barker Butts they displayed better tackling skills and held their opponents off while pressing forward.
Barker Butts were then awarded a penalty in front of the posts putting another three points on the board for them after Sils had a penalty minutes later but failed to score.
Later on an interception saw Barker Butts score another try after 25 minutes to make the score 15-0 at half-time.
As the second half got underway, second row Nick Elliot took possession and weaved through the Barker Butts defence as and touched down for an impressive try just two minutes in and with a successful conversion almost halved the deficit to 15-7.
But Sils’ carried on the momentum when Ollie Beech made a great interception and push forward giving Tama Hill the open space to put a second try on the board with one point in it 15-14.
The game was teh to and fro as both teams showed signs of physical and emotional fatigue, but Barker Butts manage a further try putting them further in front.
Sils responded immediately and Mark O’Leary scored Sils third try, but following Sils’ new Kiwi Stefan Dickinson being sin-binned Barker Butts were the stronger and scored a try at the death to put the game beyond Sils’ reach.
Sils’ next match is away on Saturday, March 22 against Berkswell and Balsall.
