The reverse fixture in September had seen Worcester run out comfortable winners by 45-0.
On a clear and bitterly cold afternoon Worcester started the stronger. With plenty of possession the visitors were moving the ball wide at every opportunity. Sils defence has improved week on week and they were able to keep Worcester at bay.
Worcester were in control for the opening 20 mins but had nothing to show for it. Sils then picked up the tempo and started playing attractive rugby in the Worcester half. They were duly rewarded by a couple of Harrison Law penalties.
On the half hour mark Worcester lost their hooker to the sin bin for 10 minutes and Sils made the numerical advantage tell. Following a series of forward drives by the impressive Sils pack captain, No.8 and new dad Pete Nicholls powered over under the post. Harrison Law added the extras to give Sils a healthy 13-0 lead with half time approaching. But Sils weren’t finished. From a 5m lineout Sils forwards secured the ball before rumbling over for another try. Once the mass of bodies had cleared it was the ever improving Ben Trenchard who took the plaudits from his collegues.
Wocester got their first points of the game just before the half time whistle with an easy penalty.
Half time Sils 18-3 Worcester
Within 6 mins of the restart Worcester were back in the game. Two well struck penalties narrowed the lead to 18-9. The Sils faithful who were braving the biting cold could have been forgiven for thinking that the writing was on the wall. Not a chance. Following forward pressure down the right channel the ball was move swiftly down the line for full back Alex Kirke to take a difficult pass and score. Harrison Law again added the extras. 25-9.
Worcester, fearing a second defeat in as many weeks then upped their game. A converted try on 22 mins gave them a sniff at 25-16. An Ollie Trace penalty on 24 minutes gave Sils a little breathing space at 28-16.
The final quarter saw both sides lose forwards to the sin bin for technical indiscretions. An unconverted Worcester try with 7 minutes to go set up a nail biting final few minutes. Worcester were camped in the Sils 22 but the home defense held strong. Try as they might to breach the Sils line the visitors were kept at bay. With 5 mins injury time played Worcester finally got their score wide out on the right. 28-26. With time up, Worcester had the conversion attempt to take a share of the points. The relief was tangible on the Worcester faces as the conversion sailed over for a 28-28 draw.
Worcester will count themselves lucky while Sils will be disappointed not to have won.
