The 1st half we were outstanding, we battled and fought, had territory and for long periods controlled possession. Worcester found some gaps and took their chances. Sils won a penalty early in the game on Worcester’s 22, Tom Searle took a quick tap penalty but Sils knocked on, Worcester gave away another penalty and this time Kai Lucas-Dumolo slotted the ball over for a 3 point lead.
After that Sils played well spending most of the half in Worcester’s area however, some missed tackles led to Worcester running the length of the pitch to take a 7 – 3 lead. Sils came back with a vengeance and Connor Shaw, playing in only his 2nd game broke through the Worcester line to score but it was disallowed as he have run over the dead ball line
Worcester scored again to give them a 14-3 lead. Sils nearly scored as Tom Searle cleared the ball and a chase down saw Sils nearly score. Worcester came straight back at us and got over the Sils try line but under pressure from Waqaar dropped the ball. From the following scrum Sils won the ball but dropped it and Worcester scored to give a 21 – 3 lead at half-time.
In general Worcester didn't bombard our line, they didn't have us making last gasp tackles, they had had the better of the game by clinically taken their chances all from long range. We know what chances we had but agonisingly we just couldn't convert them into points.!!!
Against the slope and wind for the 2nd half, we knew the boys were in the mood, relishing the challenge and we were all proud. A rousing team talk from Dave and a few tactical changes saw a rejuvenated Sils team take the filed for the second half. What a sensational comeback, Worcester were never allowed to settle, Sils smashed into ruck after ruck ,constantly winning good ball, with runners coming at pace phase after phase , we scored some great try's. For the first try Christian tackled and laid the ball off cleanly, Kai now playing at 10 chipped the ball and caught it to run through for a try which he then converted for 26 -10. Kai followed up with another try for Sils following some great forward play with lots of picking and driving to make it 26-17.
Sils kept up the pressure and a great break from Christian Walters running half of the pitch brought Sils to within 2 points at 26-24
and Worcester were rocking, big style , the” best possible scenario” was on us.
Sils pushed again ,a ricochet and when we needed that luck, Worcester were suddenly ball in hand, running a try in from distance again. But Sils weren’t done yet and more great forward play and fierce rucking led to another try to give a final score of 40 – 29.
We had witnessed a very special team effort, up there with anything we have done before. The phrase “It doesn't matter if you win or lose as long as you do your best” had a meaning today. If we had of won, we would have been ecstatic, but we still couldn't have been any prouder of the 20 players who all played a massive part in a memorable game
Well done to Ollie & Will who missed today’s game following Warwick School’s victory on Saturday, thankfully we should have a couple of our injured payers back by next weekend and George, Alex B & Tom F will also be back following school’s 7’s tournaments today.
