When a game is stopped after 20 minutes with the score standing at 52 to one side and zero to the other there can only be one conclusion can’t there? A horrible mismatch. A non-tackling team steam-rollered by a brutish opposition perhaps? Or a severely depleted visiting side still rubbing sleep dust from their eyes after a very early start, overwhelmed with the impossibility of overcoming the loss of 2 of their mates to injury on the Saturday.
But this reporter must tell you that neither scenario was correct nor, in fact, the very assumption of a mismatch itself was correct. Ledbury competed well for at least the first part of their defeat. But they met a side that played attacking rugby of such accuracy and pace that just about any opponent would have been suffering the most severe of examinations. Breakdowns were cleared efficiently by whoever was closest, half backs moved the ball quickly and intelligently, contact was taken on our terms and ball presented back beautifully. Goodness me we even scored from a cross kick. Two actually. Defenders were drawn and lovely sympathetically weighted passes given to support runners in full flow for other tries. It might only have been 20 minutes but it was worth it.
Credit to every single one of the 13. Great to see Tom Jones back and scoring. Jacob back from injury and scoring. Good to see Joe back and giving a scoring pass. Tom Metcalfe on debut added some real gas for his try. Sam did well at prop and started a movement that led to a try by drawing a defender and giving a good pass. Ethan started another try scoring move with a strong run and good ball presentation. Rob did a superb job as pack leader. While the ball just wouldn’t fall for Louis he also set up a try by clearing quickly & accurately from the base of a ruck that could have been turned over. Charlie, Finn and Nic ran the midfield with tremendous skill. Alex finishing with ruthless efficiency. Owen a constant powerful running threat. Well done to them all.
But the best statistic of all? Dropped passes? Zero.
