What would you describe as truly impossible conditions to play running handling rugby?
Sunday 29th November would be close to anybody's definition surely.
Wind? Yes plenty of it. The cap stealing, can't hear yourself think kind of wind that makes it impossible to make yourself heard into it never mind complete a kick. Rain? Yes a monsoon over the previous 36 hours but mercifully little during the game. Heavy pitch? A little but honestly the pitch was in incredible condition considering everything.
But that wind would surely hex any flowing rugby today.
This correspondent is delighted to report that the boys played really intelligent rugby against Bromsgrove; eschewing kicking for the vast majority of the game and taking every opportunity to probe the defence to bring support runners into the game and work both wings continuously. It was pleasing to see we attacked with great variety, sometimes direct and up the middle, sometimes out to the wings, and quite often a mix of both. The willingness to run support lines & pass the ball to others in good positions thoroughly impressed the guest referee, who couldn’t believe how well the lads played considering what they faced. Bromsgrove never gave up and tackled their hearts out and always challenged us at ruck time. Only a wonderful try saving tackle by Tom Metcalfe as last line of defence denied them a try we surely wouldn’t have begrudged them.
There were some fantastic tries today and while we wouldn’t normally highlight individuals we should say congratulations to Sam for scoring his first try for the club.
It is totally fair to say that everyone who turned out today played a full role, interchanging with little discernible drop in team performance. 24 players. One team. Even a storm can’t stop this team.
