There are few things more wonderful to a coach than seeing their players identify & solve problems for themselves. After all. our job should be to provide a framework and the skills for the lads to learn how to adapt to different circumstances. We don’t do the playing - they do – and they need to be smart, independent rugby players.
The leadership from within the group, led well by George, at Earlsdon was exceptional. Mistakes were identified and corrected. Attacking options were adjusted to what the opposition were doing. Players in unfamiliar positions were encouraged and supported. It’s games like these where you realise how much the group has grown this season.
There were several moments of individual brilliance too and these played a bit part in our victory. But rugby is the ultimate team game, and while Alex delivered several scintillating runs & a bag full of tries (and rightly takes the plaudits for those), we took time to thank Aman and Luc for making the game possible by agreeing to play for the opposition and for those who played in unfamiliar positions (we singed out Fin Mcluskey who was exceptional at openside despite never having played in the forwards before). Pleasing too to see a debut try for Chris.
Hoping that David (off very early with a head injury), Louis (the victim of a very bad spear tackle that could easily have led to a Red Card) and our other injuries are all fine this week.
Not personally been involved in a game before where 2 yellow cards have been shown. I think that this will become a bigger part of play in the future that we will need to manage. Our discipline needs to be spot on if we are not to become very used to playing with depleted numbers.
So the score line suggests an easy victory. Perhaps it does. But these things need to earnt through good teamwork and rugby smarts – both were on display Sunday so well done to the boys.
