A Return visit to the home Of Rugby on a lovely sunny October morning and Sils new what a battle this was going to be. From the kick Sils put themselves under pressure with the Kick not clearing 10 metres and a Laurentians Scrum, first test for the pack. A solid scrum from both teams with the ball coming out on the Laurentians side. Great pressure from Sils ended with a penalty to Sils which was worked well for Ross to score in the corner and ease a few Sils nerves, no conversion from a long way out. At the restart Sils backs were working well and a kick clear ended with Sils being penalised for not retreating quick enough, the resulting penalty led to a lineout to Laurentians 5yds from the try line but again some solid forwards rucking had Sils coming away with the ball to be penalised for a disputable forward pass. The Sils pack held solid once again in the scrum to only be penalised for breaking away to early, which from the resulting penalty led to the Laurentians equaliser. A positive reaction from Sils at the restart with some great pressing and what was to be a common part of the Sils game fantastic rucking led to Sils regaining possession and Ethan spotted a gap and went for it to regain the lead for Sils in the corner. A great response! A knock on from Sils and again a Solid Sils scrum (they weren’t going anywhere!!) but unfortunately the ball came out on the Laurentians side for them to strike back and score with a converted try. A re-start that led to another scrum for the ball not going far enough from the kick. After a succession of penalties and scrums that Sils were coming out on top of, led to Laurentians kicking clear which was well collected by Elliot who went on a good run with the ball going along the backs to Monty to score in the corner. No conversion. Continued great Scrummaging from the Sils forwards almost led to another Ross try just before the end of a great 1st period.
Half Time 12 – 15
A well taken catch and run From Joe M, ended unfortunately with a knock on and another scrum to Laurentians. Another quality Sils scrum ending with a penalty to Sils. Laurentians recovered possession and kicked clear and was picked up by Ben S who went on another good run with the ball ending up in Sam’s hands, excellent decoy work from Monty allowed him to run clear to get within 5yds of the Laurentians try line only to be bundled into touch. Another Laurentians scrum was dominated by the Sils pack which Ross picked up at the back of the scrum to break through and score his 2nd try of the match, well converted by Elliot. From the restart Elliot kicked clear for a Laurentians lineout which the powerful Laurentians Centre gathered and broke free to score close to the posts converted. By now Sils forwards were dominating the Scrums and a succession of these led to a Sils penalty that was taken quickly with Ross going on a run and support from Ethan who went over for his 2nd try of the match converted Elliot. Another Laurentians Scrum was won by Sils and an almost replica of an earlier try Ross broke of the back of the scrum to score his 3rd try of the match converted Elliot. Sils were controlling play and some great work along the backs led to Ben Graddon going over in the corner for his well-deserved try in the corner. Laurentians were still not giving up and battling well to the end, but Sils were just too strong and another break led to Ross scoring his 4th try of match which was well converted by Elliot.
A fantastic and competitive game of rugby played in the right spirit that came down to a brilliant Sils all round team performance and a solid forward display that they had to work hard for and in the end were just too strong for the a very good Laurentians team.
Final Score 19 – 48
