5. Director of Rugby Role Profile (Men’s, Women’s & M&Js)


Responsible to:

The Director of Rugby is the head of the rugby section setting the vision for the club, both in terms of the immediate short term plan and to the longer term rugby development plan of the club.

What kind of person should you be?

• A diplomatic peacekeeper – a club committee is an arena of many different personalities so the ability to listen and keep the peace is essential. Discretion is also important.
• An effective manager – tasks will have to be allocated to people so the ability to delegate is required.
• A fair leader – a club needs leadership and this starts at the top. Clubs respond positively to a fair leader who takes into consideration the views and opinions of others.
• A good communicator – communication is essential to lead meetings and to inspire the club to develop and work efficiently.
• A multi-tasker – a jack of all trades, some knowledge or experience of all aspects of the club is required.

The core responsibilities of the role:

• Provide leadership within the club setting short term plans for the season being realistic about what the club can achieve in a season on the field. Provide leadership by supporting the development of long term objectives for the club.
• Act as the conduit between the rugby committee and the teams, ensuring all relevant information is shared.
• Implement processes that will facilitate player and coach development.
• Set up a process to identify, develop and retain all players through a high quality rugby experience; promoting the club to potential players.
• Implementing processes across the whole club to ensure a safe playing environment is created, optimising fitness and conditioning, preventing and evaluating injuries and coordinating training and recovery sessions.
• Maintain the club philosophy and standards. Create team standards consistent with the values of the game; set a playing philosophy that recognises the teams strengths and is aligned to player motivations. Establish a transparent selection policy.
• Ensure club employees are working to their job profiles and contracts, monitor activity versus KPI’s.
• Coordinate and support the Coaching and Leadership teams and attend the monthly coaches meeting.
• Lead player disciplinary hearings (as necessary).
• Report on playing matters at the monthly Committee meeting.
• Complete an annual written report that evaluates the selection criteria, game plan, strategies and player progression for the AGM.

The commitment from you:

The workload will be constant throughout the year (and particularly, periods during the season where there are matches and festivals).
